Last week I launched an anonymous survey to the thousands of MSPs who follow me on LinkedIn, Facebook, and are on my email marketing list.

I've done this a few times over the last few years. My goal each time is to understand the marketing pains MSPs are feeling right now.

Here's what I discovered...


Discovery 1: Even those MSPs who are doing marketing struggle to generate leads

While a shocking quarter of MSPs who took the survey don't do any regular marketing, those who do are still struggling to turn that marketing activity into leads. Looks like turning leads into clients isn't such an issue for these MSPs.

Discovery 2: MSPs really will work with any kind of business

Although lawyers, financial services, and manufacturers are some of the favourites. I'm surprised to see how few want to work with veterinarians.

Discovery 3: MSPs are clearer on who they want to work with, than why those clients would choose them

There are two tools that you must have in place before you start marketing your MSP:

  1. An Ideal Client Profile, so you know exactly who you want to do business with
  2. A Unique Selling Proposition, so you know exactly why those ideal clients would choose you

It doesn't surprise me that a lot of MSPs really don't have these tools in place, nor that the bigger of those two problems is positioning.

Discovery 4: MSPs have a lot of work to do to have a solid 3 step lead generation system in place

I asked about the 3 step lead generation system that I've taught to thousands of MSPs across the world.

Which is:

  1. Build audiences
  2. Grow relationships
  3. Convert relationships

In those six words, there's your entire marketing strategy. It's very powerful, but, of course, there is a lot of work to build that into a marketing system, and many MSPs struggle with various elements of it.

Either which audiences to build, or what content to put in front of them to grow relationships, or what sales activity to do to convert those relationships into leads.
